Summer Love

Horseback Riding Camp in Raleigh, NC.

Summer & Track-out Camp for children ages 5 & up.

Spending a day at Dead Broke Farm's horseback riding camp is the closest you can get to spending a day at your grand parents' farm. But for those kids whose grandparents don't live on a farm, they can come experience life on a working horse farm right here at Dead Broke Farm.

The days are relaxed with a flexible schedule. The children are free to decide whatever activity they'd like to participate in when they aren't partaking in one of the supervised activities such as horseback riding, swimming, fishing, or enjoying a wagon ride. The playground, clubhouse, and farm animals are accessible to them at all times. The one exception is the chicken coop and bunny cages. Children will be assisted by our staff to prevent the animals from getting out of their enclosures. Unfortunately, the local foxes are a little too fond of our chickens and rabbits.

Camp Activities*:

1.       Western Style Horseback Riding Lessons

a.   Tacking up: blanket, saddle, and bridle

b.   Riding Lesson: balance, coordination, and control of the horse

c. Guided trail rides each day: 1 in the morning and 1 in the afternoon, which translates into at least 2 hours of actual riding time each day. The afternoon ride is optional since that's a lot of riding time for some children (especially younger children). It's always offered, but it isn't mandatory that they ride again. Riding helmets are provided.

d. Horse care: grooming, feeding, and general maintanence

e. Fundamentals: safety precautions, language of Equus, and trail riding etiquette

2.       Above-ground swimming pool (adult supervised)

3.       Wagon Rides

4.       Fishing

5.       Deluxe Jungle Gym Set

6.       Merry-go-round

7.       Other farm animals: bunnies, cats, dogs, chickens, turkeys, guineas, ducks, pheasants, peacocks, and tame pigeons..

8.       Nature walks

We make every effort to ensure that each child rides every day, but if the weather is prohibitive, the children:

1.       Can assist the guides in doing barn chores

2.       Learn to clean and oil tack

3.       Watch movies (many horse movies to choose from)

4.       Play pinball and foosball

* Children ages 5 and up can participate in our horseback riding camp. Children must be 6 and up to ride on their own.

Items to send with your child to camp each day:

1.       Plenty of bottled water (at least 4 bottles) with your child's name on them

2.       Bathing suit

3.       Towel

4.       Change of clothing (wear long pants for riding, bring shorts for the afternoon)

5.       Tennis shoes

6.       Lunch packed in a self-contained cooler to keep it cool and prevent the farm animals from eating your child's lunch

7.       Two snacks

8.       Bugspray and sunscreen are optional

9.       Treats to give the horses are optional: apples, pears, carrots, or commercial horse treats, but no sugar cubes

Because our horseback riding camp can fill up quickly, we recommend that you register early. This is especially true for 5 year olds since they have to have their own dedicated guide, and those resources are limited.

If you'd like to ask questions of a parent whose child has attended our camp, you can send an email to Bryan Hendricks, and he will share with you his child's experience at our horseback riding camp. He will try to answer any questions you may have regarding his child's experience and what your child's experience might be like. Additional references are available upon request.
